All schools of Lakshadweep will reopen on 12th of June, 2023 after the summer vacation. In pursuit of sustainable and effective measures to improve the quality of education in Lakshadweep schools, it is imperative to establish standards for all key functionaries within the education system.

The authorities have emphasized the need to establish standards for key functionaries within the education system to ensure sustainable and effective measures are implemented. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 highlights the significance of establishing standards for all stakeholders involved in the education sector, aiming to improve long-term educational outcomes. With this goal in mind, the Department of Education in Lakshadweep has outlined actionable points that will be implemented rigorously, with regular reporting and monitoring.

One of the primary measures includes updating school information in school portals. Efficient communication and accessibility, along with resource management and compliance with educational regulations, can be achieved by ensuring accurate and timely updates to the School Suite Portal. Principals have been directed to update the school details on the reopening day itself, without any exceptions.

Implementing dress codes for teachers and uniforms for students is another crucial aspect emphasized by the authorities. Dress codes for teachers promote professionalism and set a positive example for students, while student uniforms promote equality and inclusivity, minimizing socio-economic disparities and peer pressure related to clothing choices. Principals are responsible for ensuring that both teachers and students adhere to the prescribed dress code and uniform guidelines issued by the department.

The formulation of a well-designed school timetable is also essential to ensure effective functioning of the education system in Lakshadweep. The concept of a school complex, where all schools on the island are considered a cohesive unit under the supervision of the respective senior secondary school principal, has been introduced. Principals are required to prepare and submit class timetables and teacher timetables for all schools at least five days before the reopening. The optimal utilization of teachers across the island's schools, including the possibility of sharing teaching and non-teaching staff, is encouraged to ensure sufficient periods for all teachers and efficient use of available resources.

Allocation of additional charges for various responsibilities, such as midday meals, NCC, NSS, among others, should be done judiciously. The names of teachers assigned to these charges must be forwarded to the Directorate of Education for approval. Any changes to teacher postings and the allocation of charges should be made with prior approval from the Director of Education. Principals and headmasters are responsible for ensuring that teachers assigned these charges fulfill their responsibilities, and regular compliance reports should be submitted.

Infrastructure management is another vital aspect highlighted by the authorities. Principals are required to maintain detailed records of the infrastructure available in all schools, including information on maintenance, ongoing civil works progress, infrastructure shortages, and additional requirements. Contact details of officials from departments such as PWD (Public Works Department) and Electricity should be updated as necessary.

To ensure accountability and transparency, principals and District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) are obligated to submit monthly reports to the Directorate. These reports should encompass the supervision of the teaching-learning process, the execution of activities aligned with the academic calendar, such as student birthday celebrations, and other relevant aspects.

With the implementation of these standards and measures, the Department of Education in Lakshadweep aims to foster a high-quality education system and enhance educational outcomes for students across the region.
